Rotary Club of Shepperton & Sunbury was founded 75 years ago as part of a Rotary’s world-wide organisation of clubs that promote fellowship and benevolence within local and international communities.
Our members meet socially on most Monday evenings in the Ferry Coffee Shop (Nauticalia) in Shepperton. We come together for friendship and to put something back into our community. We enjoy a tasty supper with coffee, and some have a glass of beer or wine! After supper we often have invited a speaker who will provide a informative presentation on a topical or local subject. When representing a charitable cause, the speaker is presented with a donation for the charity.
We are committed to helping local charities by organising or participating in fund-raising events and activities. Our Monday meetings are also when we share ideas and plan our programme of events for the year ahead. Many events are directed at raising funds that supports worthy causes throughout the year, such as encouraging the education of young people, supporting food banks or funding local and international charities. We also invite local charities to take part in our events and retain the funds raised.
Our members regularly get together socially for fun events and competitions with neighbouring clubs that include table-tennis, bridge, cribbage, darts, badminton, pool, snooker, bowling, skittles and quiz nights.
Our members meet the costs of running the club and give their time as volunteers to help organise or support our events, ensuring that all funds raised go into our Benevolent Fund. Many of us are also volunteers locally in other organisations that are actively involved in our community.
Our President’ charity for 2023/24 is Thames Sailability, who operate the ‘Impossible Dream’, a specially adapted cruiser providing boat trips on the Thames for children, and adults, with disabilities or learning difficulties.
