Community

We reach out to our local communities directly either through funding or with practical support, and we help our local charities to fundraise for themselves.

Our belief is that raising funds for charity should be fun and as such we work hard and enjoy ourselves whilst doing it.  Each year we organise or participate in, community events across Shepperton and Sunbury.

At the Shepperton Village Fair, our Borough’s largest annual event held every June, we set up our ‘Rotary Village’ together with the Aurora Rotary club, also based in Shepperton.   Attendees at the fair had fun with face painting, playing games such as ‘Splat the Rat’ and small children rode on our popular ‘Hogwartz’ roller coaster.  This year, on 8th June, our village will host eight local charities as well as having our own club stall to learn about Rotary and what we do.

We also run various community events such as Coffee Mornings at Shepperton library (run in association with their management) usually every second Thursday morning. We must not forget our fun wine tasting soiree in the autumn in Shepperton Village Hall.

Many of you will know Rotary for our Christmas collections when we bring Santa and his sleigh around the local streets collecting for charity. Local charities collect with us, for a share of the proceeds, and we provide the opportunity for children to meet Santa.  The whole thing is worthwhile just to see those young faces light up as Santa has a chat and offers them a sweet!

Our Rotary club has a committee focused on the Community activities.  If you would like to know more about our work by contacting the committee chair, please email: community@shepsunrotary.org.uk.

Rotary Charity Fair

On the 9th March, Shepperton and Sunbury Rotary hosted a ‘Charity Showcase’ event at Shepperton Village Hall which was very well attended.  This was a chance for our community to come along, to meet and talk with truly local charities. Teams from twenty charities were present and eager to talk about all the good work they do and how we all might benefit. After a chat, several visitors are now considering joining charities to help them achieve their aims!

Visitors to the charity stalls included Nick Wood-Dow, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Surrey; Daniel Mouawad, Spelthorne’s Chief Executive; Joanne Sexton, Borough Council Leader; Maureen Attewell, a local Borough Councillor and the Mayor of Spelthorne Denise Saliagopoulos.
