International

We support specific, sustainable projects which will make a real difference such as supplying clean water and shelter, responding to major catastrophes and contributing to Rotary’s key ‘End Polio’ initiative.

Our club reaches out internationally through fund raising or directly with practical support on the ground. Club members with family roots or contacts in overseas areas, such as Kenya, Nigeria and India, helps us to identify small-scale local projects and deliver targeted support. We build relationships with those communities and follow the benefits of our efforts. One project in 2022 was for a summer camp and clothing in Kenya.

These smaller projects have a real impact in rural areas, and particularly for young women and girls, such as the Nigerian project to supply cookers to a school for education to empower women through entrepreneurship in catering and food hygiene. The handing over ceremony was given by a Director in the Ministry of Education and covered by Nigerian TV.

In India we helped provide funds for a much-needed dialysis machine in Chennai, again in partnership with the local Rotary Club.

Irons and ironing boards donated by the RAF for Rotary to support Nigerian communities

In July last year, a small selection of surplus items was donated by RAF Halton, represented here by Sgt. Peter Flynn to Shepperton & Sunbury Rotary. These items have been donated by RAF crew as they left training for operational duties.  Our club will ship these and other items to Nigeria to support rural families, particularly those ostracised locally, by helping their unaffected children grow skills and business opportunities.

“This kind donation will be sent to the specific charities in Africa for “Empowering the girl child “ through entrepreneurship skills in Catering, Dress making etc.  This kind gesture will make a difference to young girls affected by Vesico – Vaginal Fistula ( VVF) and also girls stigmatised due to Leprosy.”

Our Rotary club has a committee focused on the International activities.  If you would like to know more about our work by contacting the committee chair, please email: international@shepsunrotary.org.uk
